“Everything Your Mom Forgot to Tell You About the Real World”

In the following opinion articles, Dr. Fred Tibayan and Dr. Peter Ellman provide a list of 10 things they wish they would have known before starting practice in academic and private practice, respectively. Although it is generally known how to succeed during surgical training, advice on the next stage of a surgeon’s career (e.g. finding a job, developing relationships, work balance) are infrequently discussed.

New ACGME-approved, Thoracic Surgery Residency position "tracked" towards General Thoracic Surgery

This new two-year residency program offered by the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford Hospital and Clinics will be initiated in July 2012 and is designed for graduates of Surgery training programs. The program will emphasize broad experience in all aspects of general thoracic surgery.

The Thoracic Surgery Residents Association (TSRA) has created the TSRA Review of Cardiothoracic Surgery

This book was edited by the TSRA and authored by more than 50 cardiothoracic surgery residents from around the country. The material is organized into four different sections: General Thoracic Surgery; Adult Cardiac Surgery; Congenital Cardiac Surgery; and Cardiothoracic Trauma and Critical Care. The book is available at no cost in an electronic format (PDF, EPUB, or Kindle) or for a nominal fee as a print book via Amazon. Details on obtaining the book can be found on the TSRA website.
